Golden Vienna – Mozart: Mass in C minor

Having started the season in Italy, and taken in Bohemia, Edinburgh Royal Choral Union’s musical Grand Tour of Europe ends in Golden Vienna with a performance of Mozart’s “Great” Mass in C minor. The mass was composed shortly after Mozart’s marriage to Constanze – the work radiates his love for her and the city that became his home. A showpiece for vocal soloists, it includes some of Mozart’s finest choral music – Handelian choruses, dense polyphony and an endless stream of gorgeous melody. Rhapsodic Bohemia: 4 & 5 March in Edinburgh & Haddington

In March, ERCU continues its ‘European Grand Tour’ with a programme of music from Bohemia. After the warmth of Italy in November’s concert, our spring programme includes very different mass settings by Antonín Dvořák and Leoš Janáček, two giants of Czech music. Dvořák’s charming Mass in D major was composed for the consecration of a new chapel in the Bohemian countryside, and its intimate scale and organ accompaniment make it a perfect pairing for Janáček’s Mass in E flat; both composers’ works reveal a rusty simplicity and an innate gift for gorgeous melody. Review: Messiah, Usher Hall, Jan 2017 – 4 stars

AMONG the more recent delights, for the seasoned attender, of the Edinburgh Royal Choral Union’s annual New Year Messiah, is the delayed reaction of the Hogmanay tourists in the top tier of seats, unaware of the tradition of standing for the Hallelujah chorus, and not having invested in a programme, which includes the invitation to do so.
