Italian Warmth, Sat 26 November at Stockbridge Parish Church, 7.30pm

Italian sunshine will stream into Stockbridge Parish Church during our first concert of our season, Masses of the Masters.

Rossini was best known in his day for his blockbusting operatic scores, but it was in his old age – after nearly 30 years of relative silence – that he composed his Petite Messe Solennelle. He described the Mass as “the last of my sins of old age”, and there’s not much ‘petite’ or solemn about it. The work abounds with joyous choruses and arias, and will be accompanied as originally intended by piano and harmonium. Donizetti, Verdi and Puccini took over Rossini’s mantle in the field of Italian opera – the programme will be completed with choruses and arias from La Traviata, Lucia di Lammermoor and Madama Butterfly.
