Messiah 2017 Soloists Announced!

The Edinburgh Royal Choral Union returns to the Usher Hall with the Edinburgh Pro Musica Orchestra on Monday 2 January 2017 for its 130th annual new year performance of Handel’s Messiah. This year’s conductor is ERCU’s Chorus Director, Michael Bawtree.

This year Michael brings with him a diverse and exciting cast of soloists. We are delighted to introduce:
American bass-baritone Tyler Simpson–2015-16 marked his sixth consecutive season at the Metropolitan Opera, where he has worked on many productions having made his debut in Verdi’s Don Carlo in 2010.
Soprano Mhairi Lawson has sung in theatres and concert halls worldwide with such companies as English National Opera, the Gabrieli Consort, the Academy of Ancient Music and the Scottish Chamber Orchestra. She recently completed a month’s residency at the Carmel Bach Festival in the USA.

Tenor Nathan Vale has worked with the Bolshoi Opera, Luxembourg Opera and English National Opera. Current engagements include recitals at the Royal Opera House, St Matthew Passion for Laurence Cummings and the London Handel Society, and recordings for Nimbus Records.
Anglo-French mezzo-soprano Emilie Renard recently made her debut at the Innsbruck Festival as Ersinda in Il Germanico in Germania. In 2015-16 she returned to Theater an der Wien as Valetto in L’Incoronazione di Poppea. Plans include Monteverdi’s Vespers with the Dunedin Consort, Mozart’s Coronation Mass in Innsbruck and Wroclaw and the title role Giulietta in Giulietta e Romeo at Heidelberg Opera.
