Handel Dixit Dominus
The Baroque era produced some of the sunniest choral works in the repertoire. In this concert, Handel’s youthful Dixit Dominus (written in Italy when he was just aged 22) is performed alongside Henry Purcell’s exuberant and colourful paean in praise of music, the Ode on St Cecilia’s Day from 1692. Two settings of the Magnificat complete the programme: trumpets and drums blaze in both versions, by Johann Sebastian Bach (1733) and his contemporary Jan Dismas Zelenka (1725).
